After a long Idaho winter, your sprinkler system needs some attention before it’s ready for the growing season. Here’s how to properly prepare your irrigation system for spring.

Wait for the Right Time

Don’t be too eager to turn on your sprinklers. Wait until nighttime temperatures are consistently above freezing—usually mid to late April in the Boise area.

Check for Obvious Damage

Before turning anything on, walk your property and look for visible damage: broken heads, disturbed valve boxes, or any signs of rodent damage.

Turn On Water Slowly

Opening the main valve too quickly can cause water hammer, which can damage pipes and fittings. Slowly open the valve over several minutes.

Test Each Zone

Run each zone manually and check for proper operation. Look for heads that don’t pop up, uneven spray patterns, or leaks.

Adjust for the Season

Spring watering needs are different from summer. Adjust your controller for shorter, less frequent watering as your lawn wakes up.

Consider Professional Startup

A professional spring startup ensures your system is properly activated and any winter damage is caught early. Contact us to schedule your spring startup service!
